Rose Fights for Children
The pictures above are illustrations by O'Neill. They are from a book called Sing a Song of Safety. The "shouldn't strike a little child" picture was included by O'Neill even though the song was really talking about matches. She liked to find ways to put her own ideas into her work.
The picture "The Kewpies Teach Charity" was from one of O'Neill's Kewpie cartoons. O'Neill loved charity and to give things to others, especially children in need. She also gave away lots of her money to help her family and friends. The idea of sharing was an important theme in O'Neill's art.
In these illustrations O'Neill is showing her concern for children and their need for love, kind, help, and comfort. She learned these lesson from her parents, who nurtured her as a child.
O'Neill was also very concerned about children education. With all of her money she used some of it to send family members to school.
